Aztec Public Library Computer Use Policy

COMPUTER RULES
1. By logging on to a library computer, you agree to follow the library’s computer rules and policies. Copies are posted in the computer area and are available at the reference desk.
2. If the computer for which you have signed up is being used, and it is your time, tell the person it is your time. Clock at the sign-up desk is used to determine the time.
3. The Internet Use Policy allows one 30-minute session in the Aztec Public Library system. If you have been using a computer for 30 minutes you may be asked to surrender its use, based upon need and user traffic, as determined by library staff.
4. Parents or guardians, NOT the library or its staff, are responsible for Internet information selected and/or accessed by their children. The Aztec Public Library cannot protect you from materials you may find offensive.
5. By logging on to a Library computer, you forfeit your right to privacy. Anything you view is subject to scrutiny by library staff and/or law enforcement agencies.
6. Nudity and pornographic images shall not be accessed and sexually explicit messages and sexually explicit chat shall not be used. Profanity shall not be used in communicating. You are responsible for all language and graphics displayed on your monitor. If these standards are not followed you will be banned from using the Library’s computers, and you may be prosecuted in accordance with City ordinances and State and Federal statutes concerning pornography and harassment.
7. Printing costs 10 cents per page for black and white, and 50 cents per page for color. Follow the printing instructions that appear on screen, or ask for assistance.
8. Failure to follow these rules, the Library’s Internet Use Policy and Rules of Conduct will result in loss of library privileges and/or criminal prosecution or other legal action.
INTERNET USE POLICY
Background
It is the intent of the Aztec Public Library to provide free, equitable, and organized public access to Internet resources. This access honors the fundamental library principle of intellectual freedom, an abiding respect for the dignity and privacy of individual inquiry.
The Aztec Public Library is committed to:
-providing public access to this new communication medium
- the development and/or purchase of local information resources (such as the catalog of our holdings, periodical indexes and databases, and other text files and databases of local or regional interest)
- the identification and organization of links to resources the library believes fit its general collection policies,including selected professional concerns such as training in the use of the Internet, censorship, literacy, etc.
- search tools that reach far beyond the efforts of the Aztec Public Library to the manifold offerings of the Internet.
- making appropriate Policy changes as needed.
Disclaimer
In total, the Aztec Public Library has no control over information accessed through the Internet. We cannot be held responsible for its content. As with other library materials, supervision or restriction of a child's access to the Internet is the responsibility of the parent or legal guardian. It is also the responsibility of the child, whose curiosity is surely tempered by his or her judgment and upbringing.
Unacceptable Use of Electronic Resources
Any of the following actions may result in the loss of library privileges and/or criminal prosecution or other legal action. Unacceptable use of the Aztec Public Library's electronic resources includes, but is not limited to, the following:
1. It is not acceptable to use Aztec Public Library's electronic resources for illegal or criminal use.
2. It is not acceptable to use Aztec Public Library's electronic resources using another person’s library card. You MUST use your own.
3. It is not acceptable to violate the legal protections provided by copyright and licenses to program or data.
4. It is not acceptable to access nudity or pornographic images, or to engage in sexually explicit messages or sexually explicit chat. Profanity shall not be used in communicating. The user will be held responsible for all language and graphics displayed on the monitor.
5. It is not acceptable to use Aztec Public Library resources to seek to infiltrate a computer or computing system and/or damage or alter the software or hardware components of a local or remote computer or computing system.
6. It is not acceptable to seek information on, obtain copies of, or modify files, other data, or passwords belonging to other users. Users shall not represent themselves as another user unless explicitly authorized to do so by that user.
7. It is not acceptable to falsify information to gain access to Internet sites.
8. It is not acceptable to use our Internet workstations beyond time limits established by library staff. The primary purpose of our Internet workstations is to aid research. If patrons are waiting for the workstation, however, use of the terminal will be limited to a total of thirty minutes. Time limits may change without notice.
In general, we expect that our patrons will be both law-abiding and civil.
INTERNET DISCLAIMER
The Aztec Public Library has no control over the accuracy of the information accessed through the Internet, and cannot be held responsible for its content. Library patrons use it at their own risk.
Not all information on the Internet is accurate, complete, or current. You need to be a good information consumer, questioning the validity of the information you find.
The Aztec Public Library cannot protect you from information you may find offensive.
Internet resources accessible through the Aztec Public Library are provided equally to all users.
Parents or guardians, NOT the Library or its staff, are responsible for the Internet information selected and/or accessed by their children. Parents – and only parents – may restrict their children (and only their children) from access to Internet resources available through the Library. Parents are strongly advised to supervise their children’s Internet sessions.
